    Snow Removal FAQ
    (Frequently Asked Questions and Complaints)
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

We have just finished a very snowy, in-the-record-books sort of winter. Although this is being posted in the Spring, here are some answers for next winter:

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why did the plow driver plow only the center of the street?
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is temporary. It takes time to plow out every street properly. The service will often plow just the center lane to help people who need to leave right away. Once this is done, they will return and plow the entire street. Our service promises removal within 4 hours of completed snowfall. They are quite prompt, compared to many comparable services.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just spent an hour shoveling the end of my driveway. The plow filled the end of it while I was at work and now I have to park in the street and shovel it all over again. Why?!
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the SAME all over the state of Michigan. There is no way to avoid it. The only thing you can do is to PLAN for it; invest in a snow blower, arrange for a service or a neighbor to help you out, or prepare to put in extra time when you get home from work. It isn’t possible for the service to get all of the snow removed before you clear your drive.

It will be the same no matter who plows it.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But I live on a Court. We don’t get a little snow in our drive-- we get a WALL of snow.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, this seems to be true. The drives on courts do get more snow in them than other drives. If this past season (2007-2008) seemed particularly bad, it is because we had heavy snowfall this year and not in recent past years. There is only one way to plow out a court area—due to the curve of the street and the rigidity of the plow, the snow goes always to the same place. It’s a trade-off; the courts are peaceful and quiet all year. It’s a safe place to let your kids play in the front yard. However, in living there, you get fewer trick-or-treaters in the fall and an extra burden in the wintertime.

It is possible for homeowners to make separate contract arrangements with Conveniently Yours, our plow and landscape services purveyor, to remove your driveway and sidewalk snow. It isn’t possible for the homeowner’s association to pay for special attention to each drive in each court.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don’t like the way they plow! I won’t pay my dues.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

That won’t help anything. Seriously. By not paying, instead, your neighbors will think you are being unreasonable. Would you prefer $200 a year dues? Or would you prefer that NO plowing is done? There isn’t much of a choice. Our service is great.

In addition, if enough people will not pay, we will not be able to afford to plow at all.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The plow driver hit my recycling bin/garbage can/sprinkler head/mailbox, etc.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can try calling the plow service directly and making a complaint. They are very nice, reasonable people. You might consider calming down a minute, counting backwards from 10 to 0, and then calling.

If possible, in the future, avoid putting your trash within range of the snow overshot from the plow. The force of the snow hitting a bin will knock it over, even if they do not hit it directly with the plow. Better yet, if you have the time, wait to put your trash out until after the plows have been through.

    -----------------------------------------------
    *Requests from the Plow Service*
    -----------------------------------------------
**Treat heavy snow days as if there is a snow emergency. Try not to park on the street.

**Make sure there is nothing overhanging the street—no basketball nets, no big tree limbs.

**Please do not shovel snow BACK into the street. The drivers will sometimes make additional passes later in the day or the next day to clear the parking lanes or piles left by homeowner’s in the street. Any snow left in the street will end up in someone’s driveway, and they won’t be happy.
